MONROE COUNTY A TO Z INTERACTIVE DISPLAY
The Monroe County Local History Room & Museum exhibit team, Hannah and Jarrod had a dream; a big one; to create the history of Monroe County as a children’s pop – up book as an interactive exhibit featuring informative text, static artifacts and “hands – on” components. They initially presented to us a rough draft of all of the pages, complete with mechanical ideas for the interactive elements.
WHERE TO START?
We immediately started making plans for how to best construct the book exhibit. Analyzing the proposed plans for each of the interactive elements led to generating alternate ideas on how to keep them functional and low tech as requested. The months passed as the MCLHR&M exhibit team looked for the resources to move the project forward. With the funding in place we began to build the book from the bottom up.
“We’re excited to announce that our “Monroe County A to Z” exhibit has just won the Leadership in History Award of Excellence given by the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH)! This is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history, and we’re proud to be 1 of the 50 recipients this year!”
THE PROCESS
First, the exhibit was already divided into 12 pages arranged as six “open” books, These six dimensional books were fitted together as a six pointed star to allow access all around the exhibit. As a result, we developed the structure for the individual pages as modular units on casters. This step was absolutely necessary for transporting and moving the exhibit into the Local History Room. Next the space requirements for each of the standardized alphabet letters, the interactive elements and artifacts were measured to determine the individual page layouts.
THE PAGES
With the most critical elements accounted for, we began carving the foam pages. Meanwhile, we attached the cloth to the book binding. Simultaneously, we worked on building the unique interactive elements. As the pages began to fill in, we collaborated with the Hannah and Jarrod as they selected final photographs and wrote copy for the exhibit. Editing old historic photos was followed by resizing and printing the many images for the page backgrounds and static displays. Consequently, final layouts and assembly required more edits to ensure room for all text
The engaging exhibit is the result of countless hours of calculations, research, and play testing. The process utilized all of our capabilities and represents a collaboration of many minds working toward a common goal. Monroe County A to Z is a project that we are proud to say we were part of! The must see, award winning interactive exhibit is located in downtown Sparta, WI. The Monroe County Local History Room & Museum is in the Museum Complex Building, shared with the Deke Slayton Space and Bicycle Museum.
